Neurodivergence as a superstrength for athletes highlighted internationally
The benefits and challenges offered by autism and ADHD for elite athletes was highlighted this week in Washington Post, authored by Talia Barrington. Erin was featured, alongside colleague and co-author, Neurodiverse Sports founder and former British Olympic rower Caragh McMurtry.
Erin provided scientific and lived experience insights as an athlete.
“We are only just beginning to understand the unique strengths that autism and ADHD bring to all populations,” said Erin.
“When you are a person who is neurodivergent in an environment that doesn’t support your needs, there are going to be difficulties,” Hoare said. “But once we start to apply a neuro-inclusive lens [to training], we can start to find opportunities within sports that support differences and allow people to be the best they can be.”
Advocating for neuroinclusive high performance sporting environments continues to be a focus in Erin’s research and practice.
